Yeti™ – since 1983
The roots of the brand Yeti™ are in the Görlitz, Saxony near Dresden. When Bernd Exner plans a winter tour through the Romanian Făgăraş mountains , a region where the temperatures quickly is, down his wife Sabine Exner, an experienced mountaineer, to lows of minus 30 degrees Celsius quickly, clearly, this is not easy to accomplish with the then standard equipment. Shortly decided, Sabine Exner produces their first down sleeping bags in the summer of 1983 by hand. A success model as it quickly turns out, because the demand is growing, so that later the first down jackets, vests and gloves from the first domestic private enterprise follow. Shortly thereafter, Yeti™ receives a licence to set up a private company in the former GDR.
From its beginnings until today the brand label produced down jackets, West and down sleeping bag exclusively in Germany. Quality is not just a policy, but a matter of honor. Whether down or textile fibre, all for the manufacture of Yeti™ products materials used most stringent quality tests undergo before the materials used in the production.
Today, produces annually more than 10,000 sleeping bags Yeti™ and exported its quality merchandise around the world. But also the down and functional clothing from the Görlitzer clothing company is increasingly growing in popularity. The reason for this is obvious, a modern product design combined with uncompromising functionality.
Bulking power – down
The bulking power, called also loft, is the reason why down fillings realize an incomparably good heat insulation. The bulking power of down is measured in cuin (also known as cubic inches per ounce). To determine the loft of a down-filled, one ounce (28 grams) down into a graduated cylinder is given and then for 24 hours squeezed together. In the end of the compression phase, the volume on which the compressed down again expands is measured in cubic inches. The value specifies the bulking power of down filling. Down this sometimes made the absolute best values. Down fillings for producing highly heat-insulating clothing and sleeping bags, which must have a low as possible pack size for transport is suitable due to their very high compressibility.
Down has the insulation can be achieved best ever a perfect, sometimes. The reason for this lies in the special nature of the down. A down consists of a tiny core sprout from the thousands, fine and very soft Horn filaments from creatine. These are strong with branched fiber filaments, imperceptible, Barb for the eye. The barbs down stick together and form a dense, multi-layered fabric of layered air chambers, that is similar to the dome of a cathedral.
The naturally formed air chambers are a perfect heat accumulator that binds the air heated by the body tissue and prevents the penetration of cold air from the outside.
The finest and softest down are called by Yeti™ ‘Crystal Down’. Just down of the highest quality, the also the Crystal down standard by Yeti™ for production of down garments and sleeping bags used. The used crytal down fillings achieve absolute best of the bulking power, which on average amount to 900 cubic inches.
Crystal down dry
A problem when using down is both the care and the susceptibility to moisture. Got wet once they lose often part of their bulking power, allowing the filaments of the down is not more fully as well as previously set up. The result is that significantly fewer air Chamber are formed by the down and thus diminishes the Loft. Down with the Crystal dry technology has provided Yeti™ a solution for this problem. By this method of treatment specially developed by Yeti™ it is possible to prevent the absorption of water by the down so that neither the bulking power nor the heat insulation is compromised if come down with moisture in contact.
Yeti™ down code
A core element of Yeti™ corporate philosophy is to maintain very strict animal welfare guidelines in generating down fillings. Therefore only European down used by Yeti™ comes either from Germany or Poland. All used down according to the strict European down & feather Association (EDFA) traceability standard. The currently only standard, which includes a full monitoring of the entire production and supply chain. The control of the strict guidelines of the EDFA down Codex is ensured by an independent organization.
Thus, the down processed by Yeti™ comes exclusively from animal welfare of free birds, who have sufficient access to animal friendly food, water and light and protection grounds. The keeping of the animals per square metre, as well as the transport is subject to strict guidelines. That is, at the same time, that Yeti™ uses no down that animals were plucked alive, forced nourished or reared under conditions of steel cages.
Next to nothing
The next to nothing (NTN) products from Yeti™ is characterised by a very low basis weight. Making the NTN products exclusively ultra thin and at the same time extremely tear-resistant 7 d and 10 d used for yarns, their diameter the thickness of a human hair is only a fraction. For the production of a Yeti™ down jacket, approximately 1000 km of this very thin yarns are processed, whose basic weight is now even less than 140 grams with a length of 1000 kilometers.
The textiles, which are made of the NTN yarns are extremely lightweight, strong, durable and realize at the same time water-repellent, windproof and highly breathable material properties. There is currently only one world’s factory, which manufactures this special yarns. The production of most of the company amounted to 35 meters cloth per day. Thus it is Yeti™ NTN clothing and the NTN sleeping bags of the brand heavily limited products.
Next to nothing 2.0
With the next-to-nothing 2.0, Yeti™ has also developed a still slightly stronger variant of this high-tech material. While the previous version is 7 d and 10 d fabric blend yarns, the next to nothing is made exclusively from the very fine 7 d yarns 2.0 tissue.
This additional weight reduction is achieved by 20%. One square metre of the NTN 2.0 material barely weighs 20 grams, while a quarter page of normal printing paper already 80 grams.
Yeti™ down jackets are not only very soft, breathable, windproof and highly water-repellent and insulation, but at the same time also uncompromisingly compressible.
Virtually all items of clothing brand Yeti™ can be extremely small packaged in its own pocket, so they fit virtually in every backpack and can be carried easily anywhere thus.
Sleeping bag construction
The innovative NTN fabrics are used also for making particularly lightweight and durable sleeping bags. But in addition to improve the insulation of his sleeping bag models in addition to the use of high-quality down and the material tissue NTN, Yeti™ in addition to the usual standard methods uses special construction techniques.
The tunnel construction is a standard learn to produce sleeping bags. With this method, exterior and Interior material are sewn together directly one above the other. The Chamber, which then filled with down result be.
By the H-Chamber construction type, called the box-wall construction, the cushioned Chambers produced, indented vertical walls through the in the case. In this way, the filling material is fixed right there, where it is best to avoid thermal bridges. This type of construction ensures a uniform thickness of insulation over the entire surface of the sleeping bag.
The S-Chamber design is characterised by special angular Chambers. In sleeping bags with this processing technique, the heat can escape more difficult along the relatively weak areas of insulation on the side walls. A considerable increase of the heat-insulating properties compared to the H-Chamber construction is the result.
The innovation spirit of the brand Yeti™, which to surprisingly was the friends of the outdoor sports as well as the representatives of the press on the new, receive plenty of awards to the German brand manufacturers over the years have been.
2015/16 – the Cirrus ladies down jacket will be nominated as well, such as the fashion mens jacket to the winner of the ISPO awards.
