Appendicitis is a relatively common problem and easily treatable. However, if your treatment is not done in a timely manner may result in serious consequences.
The appendix is a small organ that emerges from the large intestine, near the place where it joins the small intestine. The appendicitis is the inflammation of the appendix.
The specific function of the appendix is not yet well known. However, it is known that has the ability to produce antibodies and its removal does not appear to cause damage in the body.
Appendicitis is a problem that occurs most often in individuals between 10 and 30 years of age, predominantly affecting males.
WHAT IS APPENDICITIS AND WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CAUSES?
Appendicitis is the inflammation of the inner lining of the appendix. It is a relatively common situation that manifests itself in many different forms and, sometimes, misleading. The symptoms can easily be confused with other clinical conditions, leading to a delay in diagnosis.
If the treatment of this problem is not made in a timely manner may be associated to several complications, such as perforation of the appendix or infection generalized (sepsis).
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
Appendicitis is caused by obstruction of the appendix. This triggers an inflammatory process with congestion and insufficient irrigation blood. Consequently leads to necrosis of the tissues with a risk of perforation of the organ.
The obstruction of the appendix can have several origins: inflammatory bowel disease, infections, parasites, foreign bodies, tuberculosis, tumors, and accumulation of feces.
WHAT SYMPTOMS HAS APPENDICITIS?
In most cases, the first alarm signal is a sharp pain in the lower right abdomen. This pain can manifest themselves initially near the umbilicus and the upper abdomen and go down.
There are several signs and symptoms of appendicitis:
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Loss of appetite;
- Pain when urinating or in the rectum;
- Constipation or diarrhea;
- Palpation abdominal characteristic.
The fever is not present initially. Only manifests in more advanced phases of the infection.
Appendicitis can be confused easily with other diseases such as renal colic, infection of bladder, gastritis , or women’s disease.
HOW IS THE DIAGNOSIS OF APPENDICITIS?
Since appendicitis can develop for frames potentially serious, it is important that your diagnosis is correct.
The diagnosis is done through observation by a doctor. This note includes the physical examination (palpation of the region painful), analysis of the signs and symptoms and carrying out blood tests and urine to the possibility the existence of other diseases less urgent, and also scans as the rafiografia and abdominal ultrasound.
In some cases, the diagnosis of this problem makes it necessary to perform a surgery in exploitative, particularly in cases in which there is a strong suspicion of appendicitis, or there is a risk of perforation of the appendix.
HOW IS IT TREATED?
The only way to cure appendicitis is through surgery. The surgical removal of the appendix is called appendectomy. The appendectomy may be done through a small cut in the abdomen or by laparoscopic means. The surgery is simple and recovery is usually fast.
If appendicitis is not treated on time, the appendix may perforate in less than 24 hours and cause complications:
- Peritonitis: consists on the infection of the peritoneum (the membrane that covers the abdominal cavity). The peritonitis can progress to infection is widespread potentially fatal;
- Abscess of the abdomen: when the infection is limited to the abdominal region.
Appendicitis is a disease that is relatively common. However, if it is not treated quickly, can have serious consequences.
If you suspect suffering from this disease should immediately seek medical help. In this period you should also avoid eating, drinking, or taking any medication for the pain, intestinal transit or digestion, given that this can have serious implications.
