“More Premium of Zenfones” Zenfone Zoom Reaches Brazil from R$2,700

Promised more than a year, the Zenfone Zoom reached the Brazilian market – already has price and release date. The device, announced at CES 2016 and seen by the two eyes that the earth is to eat at least three other international fairs (always in development), finally stopped being a promise to become reality.

TV, Mobile and the Living Room

The technology industry has sought to get the TV for decades. For a long time it was common to think of PCs as transition devices and the normal experiences of home computing and “interactive media” would happen on TV, with a user interface adapted to the big screen, driven by “super information highways”. The TV would become “interactive TV” and this would be a big part of how computing come to normal people.

Obviously, the technology industry has managed to make the way to the TV in closed devices with only one purpose: video games consoles on one side and set-top boxes for cable TV from another. The industry has tried to use them as platforms: video games are connected to the Internet, in part because they had to, and devices to play, but also as a step towards a broader view, and Microsoft also tried the other way, acquiring the WebTV.

But none of it worked. None of the attempts to separate the set-top boxes from cable companies or add some interactivity in addition to an electronic programming guide gave result. The Xbox and Playstation are online has become important for the games, but not much for other things. Attempts to bring the PC the way he is the living room (Windows Media Center and Front Row, Apple) are probably best forgotten (I could also mention the Smart TVs, but seriously: to bother me). You can then discuss whether Sony or Microsoft did better in the war of video games, but it does not matter to that broader view (and of course, more and more games will migrate to mobile).

Today we have a new wave of products trying to get there – Chromecast and the (new) Apple TV, which are actually iterations of a wave of previous products (Vudu, Roku, Boxee) that also never reached a mass market (There is a complex discussion here on content availability, the largest US very specific part). But what interests me most is that both devices are made to make TV a donkey glass – a peripheral for your smartphone. Chromecast not have a user interface on the screen. They are both made to the smartphone market: made to sell smartphones (they are very cheap products with low profit margins to make money for themselves and most of the content of the profit goes to the content industry) and content that comes smartphones.

That is, even if Apple or Google finally “win” and put your connected device on each TV in the developed world, is like a sideshow. TV is not the end point of consumer technology in every sense of the term. The revolution of consumer computing has happened anyway, without even touching the TV.

First the web, not the “interactive media” or “super information highway”, took the PC into every home in the developed world, and now smartphones led a truly personal computer for every pocket of the world. And it turns out that smartphones and tablets are the means by which computing comes to the living room, and the way the technology industry dominates the video content, whatever that means (This, if it has not been clear is why Satya Nadela said the Xbox is no longer central to Microsoft’s strategy).

From all this, there are two things that make me think:
